BTEC Qualifications at

209 Squadron

The Air Training Corps provides academic training for all involved cadets.
As a certified BTEC provider cadets can achieve BTEC's in Aviation Studies and Public Services.
The training syllabus is split into several sections:

  • Probationer Cadet Training,
  • First Class Cadet Training,
  • Leading Cadet Training
  • Senior Cadet Training,
  • Staff Cadet part 1 Training,
  • Staff Cadet part 2 Training

Cadets completing First Class are then approved for the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and the BTEC in Aviation Studies

The Probationer Training Program is designed to be an introduction to the life of an Air Cadet.
The subjects covered are as follows: The ATC, The RAF, History of Flight and Basic Drill.
The program is designed to introduce the potential cadet to the ATC by providing them an insight into the history of the
ATC, the RAF and flying. The Drill learnt during training is only basic, just enough to get
the cadet to enrolment stage prior to First Class cadet Training.

The First Class Program is by far the most important training in the ATC.
Once a Cadet passes First Class they are then able to attend Annual Camps, Flying, Adventure Training and more
The syllabus is also the most intense and as such we provide training on every parade evening for
Probationer Cadets to get them progressed through First Class as quickly and efficiently as possible.
The subjects covered in this programme are as follows:

  • The Rifle,
  • Initial Expedition Training,
  • Map reading,
  • Airmanship 1,
  • Communications and Drill.

The First Class Programme should take no longer than 3 months to complete.

The Leading Classification is the first of three classifications that contribute towards the BTEC in Aviation Studies (ATC)
The BTEC is the equivalent of one GCSE grade A-C. Leading Cadet Training consists of three main subjects:

  • Basic Navigation
  • Airmanship 2
  • Principles of Flight

Cadets are required to complete 25 hours of project time

The Senior and Staff Part 1 Cadet Training programme is the second and third parts to the BTEC
in Aviation Studies (ATC) and also includes 25 hours of project time per course.
cadets are given the opportunity to choose 2 subjects per course from the list below:

  • Air Navigation
  • Pilot Navigation
  • Airframes
  • Propulsion and Operational Flying.

Staff Cadet Part 2 consists of self study on the administration and running of an ATC Squadron.
The Cadet studying for the Staff Part 2 will also need to learn about the hierarchy of the ATC,
such as roles and responsibilities of the Squadron, Wing, Region, Corps Staff and the funding of the ATC.
The Cadet will also be required to specialize in either teaching or administration roles on the squadron.
Staff Part 2 is assessed through an interview with a senior Wing Staff Officer.
